In 1863–1864 Union troops burned down most of downtown after attacking Confederate batteries located there; this event also destroyed much property in town which has since been replaced by new buildings. After World War I Wilkes-Barre began to grow rapidly as both refugees from Europe and industry moved into the area; it reached its peak population growth during World War II with over 50%of its residents working in industry or services related thereto 84%. [the perpetrators] managed finallyto complete their revenge killings before anyone got hurt either way’ .... At 6pm on October 15th 1865 3 men dressed like Indians burst through our doors Community leaders quickly called for help & soon 30 volunteers showed up ..... The men were apprehended & taken back inside where they died according to witnesses (Ibid). According to historian Dr Steven Jaffee "it seems clear that they knew who did it& they just wanted everyone else safe too". One possible motive could have been retaliation against white settlers who had recently driven away Native American tribespeople from their traditional hunting grounds southnear Pittsburgh’......... [the perpetrators] killed three men--all wearing masks--outside our house just before 6pm OCTOBER 15TH 1865 while we were home watching TV ............ They thought we were Indian attackers & didn't realize until later that we're actually Englishmen ...... [the perpetrator's victim] said she saw him running towards her home with a knife ......... [Ibid]. A few weeks later another murder took place outside Western Mill Tavern owner Amos Drexel’s store ....................... Justices delivered death sentences.............. As mentioned earlier there seemed no connection between any homicides& Suspects Identified Three Men Who Died By Suicide Before Their Trial......................... Thereafter sporadic murders stopped although one occurred again 8 YEARS LATER ............... Murders resumed again almost immediately after defendants' conviction & execution .............. Wilkes had two siblings: sister Ann (born 1789) and brother John (1792-1864). He attended Friends Meeting House School and then Williams College, where he earned an A.B. in 1811. After graduation, he moved to Philadelphia as an editor for the New York Evening Post and then as a correspondent for the Philadelphian. In 1816 he became acting secretary of state under James K. Polk. In 1824 Wilkes married Rachelle Mifflin; they had four children: Sarah Jane (1825-1914), Ellen Willard (1827-1929), John Quincy Adams III (1830-1926), and Charles Sumner Wilkes (1832-1920). From 1830 to 1840 he served as United States minister to Great Britain; from 1841 to 1845 he served as ambassador to France. In 1850 he was elected governor of Pennsylvania; he was reelected in 1854 and 1860 but lost reelection in 1862 due to Democratic Party corruption scandals.
