In 1824, Isaac Read bought land adjoining Dunlap's Mill from him and began to build a house there which he called Griswold House. When Read died in 1829, his wife Mary took over most of his holdings within Griswold House and continued to live there until her death in 1857. After her death, Griswold House passed through several hands before being purchased by William Dennison Sr., an inventor who lived in Rochester Township for many years before moving to Wilkesbarre in 1907. Dennison Jr.'s son William Dennison III inherited the property after their father's death. In 1924-1925, Mr.. Wm... Smith developed an oil well on part of Dennison Jr.'s estate which led to increased development around Griswold House; however much of this activity has been destroyed by fire or weather damage since then!
