However, during World War II Whitehall lost its status as an important steel center because of Axis bombings that destroyed many towns along the Susquehanna River corridor. After the war ended, white industry returned with a vengeance with new factories such as Alcoa Inc., Lewiston Electric Supply Co., and PPG Industries opening up around Whitehall; however, these companies have all since closed down or been sold off to other companies.
