Whitehall is a town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,902 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Berks County after Reading. As of the 2010 census, Whitehall had a total land area of , of which was land and (1.5%) was water. The first European settler in what is now Whitehall Township was Nicholas Pennoyer, who arrived from Maryland on October 26, 1784. He named his new tract "Whitehall" after his home place in England where he had been born. The township's current name originated with a donation by John Dickinson to the town of Gettysburg on July 3, 1814. At that time all of Berks County were part of Pennsylvania and there were no townships or villages within it; each township formed one side of a square measuring twelve miles long and six wide. On July 3, 1814, as part of the donation made by John Dickinson to help build Gettysburg during the American Revolution,[2] James Hance donated two acres (8 ha) eastof Main Street to create what would become Whitehall Township.[3] In 1836 when white Settlers began moving into this corner of Berks County they found an open spot for farming on what became known as Little Beaver Creek[4]. A post office was established at this location on December 12th, 1836,[5] and remained in operation until 1863 when it moved to nearby Allentown due to growth rates in that county). By 1850 there were over 200 residents living in Whitehall Township while only 10 residents lived in Allentown[6]. In 1861 all but two settlers left for new homes in Harrisburg due to increased competition from neighboring counties. In 1870 about 160 people lived here including 30 farmers and 60 non-farmers[7], but by 1890 only 25 farmers remain[8],[9],[10]. This change can be partially attributed to railroad construction around this time which disrupted farming activities along Little Beaver Creek and elsewhere throughout Berks County.[11],[12],[13]}

In 1840, the name was changed to honor General James K. Polk when he became president of the United States. Prior to that it had been called "Plymouth". On October 3rd, 1865 Union troops retreating from Gettysburg fired upon a Confederate artillery battery near Whitehall while under cover of darkness; this caused several casualties among Union troops and civilian bystanders and led to public outcry against Reno's inaction at Gettysburg which helped lead to Lincoln's decision not to pursue Robert E. Lee further south
