Whitehall is a town in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Whitehall was founded in 1799 by Nicholas Green and his family as a small farming community on the banks of the Monongahela River. In 1818, Whitehall became a borough of Philadelphia. In 1868, it became a township of York County and in 1916 it became a city. The current mayor is Dan McCrea (D). The history of Whitehall begins with Nicholas Green who settled there in 1799 after leaving England for unknown reasons. He and his family built what was to become Whitehall on the banks of the Monongahela River and named it after himself - Nicholas Green's Valley or "The Valley". Nicholas Green owned land north of present-day Whitehall and spent much time trading with Native Americans along the riverbank which enabled him to establish himself as one of Pennsylvania's leading landowners during this early period. His holdings included lands that extend into both York and Cumberland Counties today. In 1818, when Philadelphia annexed York County, Nicholas Green decided to move his family toPhiladelphia so they could be closer to their business interests within that city - he unsuccessfully attempted to keep them within York County too. However, because Philadelphia had no laws restricting Jewish migration at that time (the law did come into effect soon thereafter), many Jews moved to Philadelphia from nearby Bucks County during this time frame due to its growing population and thriving commercial economy. That year also saw another important event in Whitehall's history; John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry occurred just south of town - although not all residents were directly affected by the raid; some businesses along Route 9 between Strasburg Junction and Easton were destroyed including John Brown's Tavern which hosted local militia members during the raid before fleeing back across the border Folkston Township towards Maryland following its conclusion two days later! John Brown eventually arrived in northeastern PA less than two weeks after Brown’s Raid took place while still residing near Harper’s Ferry - he likely encountered elements of militia there before fleeing back across state lines towards Lancaster where he committed suicide two days later under mysterious circumstances! This event helped spur development around Harper’s Ferry over subsequent years culminating with passage by Congress Of A bill authorizing Governor Robert Ewing To annex West Virginia pursuant thereto - an act subsequently vetoed by President Ulysses S Grant!
