In the late 1800s, gunnery practice became an important part of military life in America. In order to supply American soldiers with accurate fire ammunition, arsenals were established throughout the country. One such arsenal was located in Whitehall, which served as both a storage and firing site for artillery pieces used by the American military during the Civil War. After the Civil War ended, many soldiers moved back to America and new towns were founded throughout the surrounding area. However, Whitehall remained an important community until its decline began in the early 20th century. By 1922, it had fallen victim to numerous fires and urban development that destroyed much of its infrastructure. However, through hard work and determination from residents and officials alike, Redevelopment Plan #1 was created which aimed to revitalize downtown Whitehall as a hub for arts and culture while also creating new businesses opportunities for locals. Today’s city hall complex is one result of this effort; however most aspects of downtown still reflect its traditional cultural values – including art galleries (like Mill Creek Gallery), theaters (like Opera House), pubs (like The Crown Arms), antique stores (including Griggs & Gibbs) and more!
