Whitehall is a small town in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Whitehall is located on the Susquehanna River. It is east of Centre Township and west of Hazleton Township. The first settler in Whitehall was Nicholas Fenton who arrived in 1786. The town was founded on October 6, 1792 by General John Forbes with a grant from the State of Pennsylvania. On February 12, 1815, Governor Andrew Jackson pronounced Whitehall "the most important settlement in this vicinity." At that time it had a population of 317 people and consisted of 23 stores and 22 houses. In 1827 it had increased to 476 people and included 45 stores and 50 houses. In 1834-35 President James K. Polk sent troops to help quell a local militia insurrection which began when some farmers refused to pay taxes they owed to the state government. A group of men led by William Gaston burned three storehouses in what became known as the Gaston Rebellion; this event helped solidify white control over Black Street in downtown Whitehall (now Old City). On November 3, 1861 during the American Civil War Unionists attacked Confederate forces under Lieutenant Colonel Elijah Witherspoon while they were withdrawing from an engagement near Harper's Ferry; twenty-three soldiers were killed and fifty-six wounded including Marshal Samuel Janklowe who later died from his injuries at White Hall; this attack marked one of several skirmishes between Unionist forces and Confederate units throughout the area leading up to Pickett's Charge which resulted in Confederate victory at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865.. During World War II there were two airfields built here: US Army Air Forces Station Whiteman Field (later Whiteman Air Force Base) opened December 15th 1942 and RAF Horsham Stations[2] opened May 10th 1943 both used for bombers training operations until early 1945 when they closed down due to lack of military use after V-E Day.. After World War II many businesses closed or relocated but one remaining business still exists today - Capital Brewing Company - which started as a grocery store back in 1924 before becoming one of the few locally owned breweries operating throughoutPennsylvania during the late 20th century - until its closure in 2006.. In 1824, Whitehall became part of York County and its first mayor was George Armstrong Crouse. In 1881, the first white high school in York County opened in Whitehall. The other is Southwestern Pennsylvania College-Northwest Campus which opened in 2002 adjacent to James Buchanan High School on what had been a dairy farm.
