The mission was abandoned in 1785 because of Indian hostilities. A post office was established at Whitehall in 1814, and remained so until 1870. Whitehall became a borough in 1865, but reverted back to borough status in 1971. The township was combined with Johnstown borough into Latimer township effective July 1, 2006. According to the United States Census Bureau, Whitehall has a total area of , all of it land.
