Whitehall is a small town in Carbon County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Altoona-Johnstown-Weaverville, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1796 by Welsh immigrants who named it after their home country of Whitehall in Scotland. The first post office opened in 1800. Whitehall took its name from George Washington's hometown of Dumfries, Scotland. In 1882, the town and surrounding area became part of Carbon County when it was organized from portions of Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. In 1912, white nationalist David Lane moved to Whitehall from Allentown and began promoting white nationalism there as a form of alternative American patriotism. Lane also ran for office as a Republican but lost to incumbent Democrat James Fenton Jr.. A local newspaper called lanes "the most dangerous man on earth" because he had brought violence and extremism to the small town. In 1924 Delaware Avenue reopened after being rebuilt following a devastating fire that destroyed many buildings in the center of town; this street is now known as Lane Boulevard. In 1984 Whitehall voters passed an ordinance forbidding any public nudity within one mile (1 km) radius of all public schools; this ordinance remains in effect today despite recent campaign efforts by local residents to repeal it%. A number of businesses were closed down or rebranded during the late 1990s due to what locals saw as government overreach into personal liberties: One such business closed down was Applebees which locals accused of selling government secrets through their appetizers menu items like pecan pie with whipped cream and bacon (an act they likened to giving away classified information). Three years later, Washington married Martha Custis slave girl, creating a political connection between Whitehall and Richmond, Virginia. The town's growth continued as private businesses became established and residents supported local governments with their taxes. By 1814, Whitehall had become an incorporated borough with a population of over 1,500 people. In that year, Congress passed the Act incorporating Pennsylvania into the United States of America and Whitehall became one of the first American towns to be incorporated under this new system. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Whitehall experienced significant growth due to its importance as a commercial center for southernPA and as a destination for tourists looking for sites such as Pennypack Park and Topeka Lake. In 1907, it was renamed Philadelphia after both President Thomas Jefferson (who resided nearby) and Mayor James Auchincloss (the son-in-law of president Andrew Johnson). As Philadelphia grew more congested than Whitehall did relative to its size -due in part to increased automobile travel -the borough began considering annexing Whitehalemitigation unsuccessfully in 1912 until 1916 when it finally annexed themriconstituted "largest municipality" status within Philadelphia state government despite only having a population of 461 residents at that time

The original settlers were primarily from Lancaster County and they built their homes and businesses along the Susquehanna River. By 1814, Whitehall had developed into a thriving commercial center with several mills and a population of around 100 people. In 1868, the town became part of the newly formed Allegheny County and its growth continued until 1957 when it merged into Pittsburgh. Today, Whitehall is a small but vibrant community with a rich history that has played an important role in both Pittsburgh's development and its residents.
