Whitehall is a small town in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Erie–Niagara Falls, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Whitehall was founded by Scottish immigrants in 1768 as a trading post on the Susquehanna River. The post office was established in 1775 and continued operation until it closed in 1812. In 1825, Whitehall became the seat of government for Fayette County. It remained so until 1974 when it moved to Erie. The town's first store opened in 1768 and its first settler was John McLaren who arrived from Scotland with his family. By 1800, there were 10 families living in Whitehall with a total population of around 80 people. A school was built in 1811 but it closed due to lack of funding and re-opened as a Methodist church in 1823 under the leadership of Revs Jno Witherspoon and James Gillespieius Jr.. In 1840, violence erupted between pro-Unionists and pro-Confederate partisans near Whitehall after General Robert Ewing's campaign for appointment as Ulysses S Grant's Secretary of War caused widespread panic throughout the area over potential political upheaval should he be elected president that year. As a result of this unrest, large numbers of Scotsman left Whitehall for good during the 1840s . In 1865%, white Unionist troops burned down two homes (of ten) located east of town while retreating from Gettysburg following an unsuccessful attack against Confederate forces positioned there; this event is known locally as "The Burning." Prior to 1865, many residents had supported Stanton's Union side during the American Civil War because they felt they could not do anything about Lincoln’s election win given their local alignment with North Carolina (they did not share secessionist aspirations). However after 1865 many residents switched sides because they realized that any attempt at resistance would have resulted in military occupation which would have been difficult to escape or suppressed without leaving their homes (). A new courthouse was completed by 1870 which served as county seat until 1974 when Erie replaced it with its current building on Market Street (now Main Street). The old courthouse still stands on private property to this day being used for storage/event space only

He built a mill on the creek which later became known as Sargent's Run. The first land grant for Whitehall Township was dated March 10, 1787 to John Fenton fromought by Captain James Cook after his voyages through that country during the American Revolutionary War). In 1854, Philadelphia Borough annexed Whitehall Township and all its constituent parts except Mayfield which remain withinPhiladelphia Borough today
