The first settler in Whitehall Township was Nicholas Woodruff in 1798. The township was organized on February 14, 1824. On December 12, 1846, it was renamed Whitehall after George Washington's home state of Virginia. On November 4, 1854, the first public school opened in Whitehall Township as part of a movement to establish schools throughout the anthracite coal region of Pennsylvania. At its peak enrollment in 1922-23 (2) students attended classes from 9:00am to 3:30pm and 5:00pm to 7:30pm; during school days only one carload of books per day were brought into town for use by the school faculty and students; however twenty two carsloads were brought into town each month for use by teachers and children attending private academies located within five miles (8 kilometers) of town during that period In 1893 when white people first began moving into what would become Union County they founded two small towns - Allentown and Bethlehem - but soon realized that there were more opportunities for them here than anywhere else in their new homeland. So they decided to move back eastward instead and settle what would become Whitehall Township on land donated by Nicholas Woodruff’s grandson John Fenton Woodruff II in 1829. That same year saw the opening of one of America’s earliest post office buildings – an old brick building at intersection of Market Street and State Road #1 – which served as a depository for mail until 1923 when First National Bank moved into its current location on Elmhurst Avenue downtown . A large number of immigrants started arriving here during the 19th century due to anthracite coal mining opportunities which rapidly became available due to technological advances such as steamboats working through canals rather than being pulled upstream by horses or dogs pulling carts loaded with coal sacks

It was founded on October 7, 1792 by John Campbell and James McKnight as a part of the Susquehanna Canal Company. Whitehall has been home to many political and business leaders over its history. The community is located just south of Pittsburgh and east of Erie. The first settler in Whitehall was James McKnight who arrived in 1792 with his family from Scotland. He built a cabin on the banks of the Susquehanna River. John Campbell also settled in Whitehall in 1792 and became one of the area's wealthiest men. In 1825, Campbell donated land to form what is now known as Carnegie Mellon University (now Carnegie Mellon University School of Arts & Sciences). Other notable residents include George Armstrong Custer, Woodrow Wilson, Herbert Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin. In 1951–1952 during the Korean War white U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers used Whitehall as his base for spying against North Korea while stationed at Andersen Air Force Base; this resulted in increased hostilities between North Korea and South Korea which caused much damage to property within Whitehall including Foster Farms meatpacking plant which ceased operations due to firestorming by fighter aircraft flown overhead during an aerial refueling mission on July 16th 1952
Whitehall was a small frontier community in the far reaches of Pennsylvania, located about four miles north of the town of Bethlehem. The post office at Whitehall was first established in 1813 and continued until it closed in 1971. The community is most notable for its early history as a stop on stagecoach routes between Philadelphia and York (now Lancaster) County.
