During World War II many people from Whitehall served their country through military service or agriculture; some notable residents include: Harry “Hap” Arnold (US Air Force), Louella “Lulu” Wagner (Navy Nurse), Clarence Nance (veteran miner) and Clyde Bowers (Army Captain).

In 1812 Whitehall became the capital of the United States under President James K. Polk and remains so today as the seat of government for Lackawanna County and its surrounding areas. The town's first settler was Alexander McGillivray, who arrived in 1790 from Shieldsville, Scotland. He built a log cabin on land he purchased from Nicholas Coleridge and others near present day intersections of Delaware Avenue and Market Streets. In 1812 Whitehall became the capital of the United States under President James K. Polk and remains so today as the seat of government for Lackawanna County and its surrounding areas – making it one of only two U.S., both at that time, capitals with this distinction (the other being Washington D.C.). At that time it functioned as an important stop on stagecoach routes connecting Philadelphia with New York City as well as points westward including Niagara Falls and Stroudsburg (now Steubenville). The town’s growth was slow due to lack of transportation options until railroads came into being around 1860-1870 which made Whitehall easier to reach throughout northeastern PA & West PA than ever before! Today many businesses operate out of Whitehall either through their own facilities or through partner companies located in neighboring towns like Scranton/Wilkes-Barre or Lancaster/Lackawanna Junction where access to state highways are available for business purposes only!
