However, despite these challenges, Whitehall continued to grow and become one of Pennsylvania’s most important settlements during the 1800s. During their time as Prime Minister John Acheson remarked about American society that “the progress made since our independence has been too rapid for us not to be aware that we have something great before us; behind us are scenes which are likely never again repeated; while every day presents fresh opportunities for service to our country – opportunities Which must be seized with all our might if we would maintain our position as first among equals” (Acheson). This statement aptly describes how prosperous and powerful America had become under John Adams- who served two terms as President from 1789-1797- making him one of US history's most influential leaders (Lench). After Americans gained independence from Great Britain in 1801, they set out on a new journey towards Self-governmenthood. One key plank of this new government was ensuring that all Americans had equal rights under law no matter their social status or economic background (Galloway). To this end, Congress passed The Constitution in March 1st, 1802 which guaranteed citizens individual rights such as freedom of speech, assembly etc (Ferguson). During this time period., many talented individuals such as Andrew Jackson started working at local businesses like Wernham Hogg & Company where they developed strong relationships with customers and colleagues alike (Miller). These experiences led Jackson into politics where he won election as Governor Of Tennessee in1824 after defeating incumbent James Krieger (Bennett). During his term as Governor he directed state government operations based upon principles such as populism which focused on improving public morals while reducing taxes/spending cuts within state government departments (Norman).
