In 1792, Whitehall was the capital of Pennsylvania. It served as the seat of government for the Colony of Pennsylvania and later for most of the United States. The area now known as Whitehall was first settled by Europeans in the late seventeenth century, and began to grow in importance during the eighteenth century. In 1792, it became the capital of what is now Delaware County after being chosen by a vote of its citizens. At that time, Delaware was part of Maryland and its capital was at Fredericktown. Whitehall's history can be traced back to 1688 when Pennsylvanians voted to create a new colony within present-day Delaware County. The original settlers were primarily Englishmen who came overland from England specifically to start a new society in what is now Pennsylvania. They named their settlement "Whitehall" after their home country which they saw as an ideal place to settle since it had plenty of land and resources. By 1792, Whitehall had become one of the most important cities on account for its location on both sides of the Susquehanna River - making it an important center for trade and political activity throughout much of pre-revolutionary America. The city quickly grew into a major commercial center due to its location at the confluenceof two major rivers:the Susquehanna and Braddock Rivers. This made Whitehall an important transportation hubfor goods travelling between Philadelphia and points further south including Princeton, New Jersey; Trenton, New Jersey; and Yorktown Heights, Virginia among others. Additionally, Whitehall was home to many prominent local merchants such as John Laird who operated several successful woolen mills in town while also serving as mayor from 1793 until his death in 1807. In addition, various state institutions such as Congress Hall (now known as Independence Hall) were located here including members' chambers where lawmakers would meet before passing laws affecting all aspectsof southern Pennsylvania including Delaware County which relied heavily on agriculture for revenue purposes at that time
