The Whitehall Arsenal was a large armory in central Pennsylvania, opened in 1798 and became one of the leading arsenals of the United States. It was closed in 1815. The arsenal played an important role in the history of both the American Revolution and the War for Independence. The first armory on this site was built by Colonel George Washington to store munitions during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). Washington's armory functioned as a small depot where artillery pieces, ammunition, firearms, and other supplies were stored. In 1798, Congress authorized construction of an additional armory to serve as a replacement for Fort Pitt at Yorktown (now Pittsburgh). The new armory was named in honor of General John Forbes who had fought against British forces at Saratoga (1777). Construction began on October 15th, 1800 and it soon became apparent that much more than just arms were being built here. One of the first tasks assigned to the new armory was to build a hospital for soldiers injured during the Revolutionary War. The hospital served as both an emergency facility and a training ground for future military leaders. The Whitehall Arsenal also played an important role in supporting America's war effort during the War for Independence. In particular, munitions from here helped supply America's armies with food, clothing, medical supplies and cannonballs essential to victory over Britain. When hostilities ended in 1814, most of what remained of Whitehall Arsenal were demolished within six months due to financial reasons only sparing parts which could be used again partially or completely as arsenals or storage facilities until they were razed completely by 1840s due to lack of funds to keep them going anymore

Whitehall is a borough in Erie County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Whitehall was Andrew Black who arrived in 1757. He established a cabin on what is now Beaver Street and named it Fort Blackberry after his fort on an island in the Monongahela River. Black also built a gristmill and made salt from the earth with which to sell to traders along the Susquehanna River. In 1802, John Potter moved from Allentown to Whitehall and began farming there. Potter became one of the leading farmers in Erie County and served as mayor of Whitehall from 1824 to 1830, 1834 to 1840, and 1851-1854. In 1828, he donated land that formed today's eastern border of Whitehall Township (in which he also livered). In 1840, Benjamin Latimer founded Latimer & Latimer Paper Mill on present-day First Avenue in Whitehall Township; this mill operated until 1907. The milling industry declined during World War II but later revived with new production facilities at nearby Mount Pleasant and Monroeville mills. Whitehall was incorporated as a borough on February 14, 1901 by an act of the Pennsylvania General Assembly under the name "Erie Borough". On October 15, 1909 it changed its name again to "Whitehall Township" after becoming part of Erie County following statehood within Pennsylvania. The township encompasses much of southern Beaver County including parts of what are now Mount Pleasant and Monroeville townships; these areas were not included within Whitehall when it became a borough nor did they gain town status until 1959 when all township lands were consolidated into one entity called "Whitehalght Township". A post office has been located at Whitehall since 1800; however mail service through Erie City continued until 1926 due to lack of space or infrastructure at that time within either city limits! A small community store operated near present day North High School from 1922 until 1951 before being closed down by fire! The building still stands vacant today but has been used for storage purposes ever since!
