Whitehall is a small town in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Altoona-Johnstown-Centerville, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Whitehall was James Strickland who arrived in 1768. His son John built a log cabin on the site of what is now Main Street in 1811. In 1814, William Smith and his family moved to Whitehall from Montgomery County and started the first blacksmith shop in the area. In 1830, Isaac Hildebrandt bought land east of Main Street and began to build a home there which he named "Hildebrandt's Post". He also founded an academy for young men called "Hildebrandt's Academy School" which still exists today on North High Street. In 1843, Amos Barton founded the Barton & Barton Telegraph Company with four brothers including George Barton. The company served as one of the early backbone providers of telephone service throughout central Pennsylvania and played an important role in developing Altoona as a city. / / / From its humble beginnings as a post office near Lancaster (near where it stands today) Whitehall grew into one of Altoona’s most vital commercial districts – becoming known for its produce (grapefruit being especially famous), clothiers and other retail stores; large art galleries; well-known banks including First National Bank; top-notch medical facilities (ecclesiastical and general); more than just a stop on the way to or from work; but also – over time – an intellectual center for many rural residents who could come here for lectures by leading scientists like Thomas Edison or Charles Darwin? Whitehall is a small town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States, located on the Susquehanna River. The population was 1,547 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading Township government. The first settler in Whitehall was Nicholas Miller in 1784. Whitehall's current boundaries were set by Act of Congress in 1802 and reflect the original land grant which included the present-day town site. Whitehall became an incorporated village on February 12, 1894. On December 14, 1907, it merged with Reading to become one municipality under the same name. The township of Whitehall annexed portions of Reading Township on January 3, 1912. The Black & Decker Company was founded here by John A. Black and his sons Abram and Benjamin Black in 1881 as a machine shop and foundry company; it later became one of America's leading electric companies with plants throughout North America. In 1903 it built its first manufacturing plant outside of North America at what is now White Hall Road and State Street in central Whitehall (now Borough Park). In 1916–17 it jointly developed a new chemical plant near Pottstown that produced TNT for World War I; it closed after the war but left some legacy equipment behind including a large turbine engine factory known as "The Beast", which still stands to this day inside Pottstown Township Community College campus adjacent to Borough Park Boulevard (formerly West Philadelphia Parkway).

In 1813, Whitehall became the capital of Pennsylvania and was renamed Philadelphia. Whitehall also served as the temporary seat of government for West Pennsylvania during the American Revolution.
