West Mifflin, Pennsylvania is a small town located in the county of Luzerne in Pennsylvania. The population was 5,847 at the 2010 census. Its name comes from two Dutch words, "Westermolen" meaning "west wind" and "Flinch"meaning "a deer." West Mifflin is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now West Mifflin were Dutch traders who sailed into the region in 1624. After landing on what is now Delaware Bay, they explored for several weeks before returning home. In 1638, English explorer John Smith discovered Penn's Colony and named it Wertoomington after Sir William Penn. The first European settlers arrived in 1639 and soon began trading with Native Americans living along the Delaware River. By 1701, when British colonists landed at Quakerstown on Long Island Sound, they had founded a community known as Newtown near the mouth of Delaware Bay called Wernicke's Landing because its founder, John Wernicke, had been shipwrecked there that year while exploring for new land.(1) In 1764-1765 during King George II's War (the French and Indian War), residents of Newtown gathered together to form a militia to resist British attacks on their homes. On October 7th of that year about 100 men under Colonel John Forbes started an attack against a detachment of Tories under Lieutenant Governor Thomas Gage at Easton Township where Forbes made contact with local Indians for the first time.(2) The Battle of Easton opened fire upon Forbes' party which fled into trees; eventually all but one man were killed or captured.(3) Over 400 people were injured or taken prisoner including some women and children who were forced to march back to Trenton with their captors.(4) Forrest's victory signaled an end to open warfare between Great Britain and France throughout North America; however hostilities would not largely die down until after General James Wolfe's defeat at Yorktown in 1781 led by General Monmouth(5). For many years following this event communities around Philadelphia grew restless looking for opportunities beyond their respective townships boundaries.(6) While tensions between rural villages and urban centers continued throughout most of the 19th century(*7), few major events took place within these areas such as frontier raids or social unrest that could threaten individual property rights(*8). In 1814-1815 trader Samuel Morse moved his family from Newtown to Williamsport due torising prices for coal caused by increased production from Kentucky rigs dotting central Pennsylvania.*9 From then until 1821 when he sold his interest in Williamsport Charter & Navigation Company heisted more than $1 million worth of coal from anthracite mines across western Pennsylvania*10 Throughout this time period entrepreneurs like Amos Lackland (*11*) developed wagon roads connecting these same Anthracite resourcesVocabulary: Coal - any hard black rock formed overHot Springs - springs using hot water insteadof cold

West Mifflin is a town in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 6,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settlers to the area that would become West Mifflin were Andrew and Susanna McIntyre who came from Scotland in 1786 and 1787 respectively. They erected a log cabin on the site of what is now known as McIntyre's Run which they named after their brother-in-law, James McIntyre. In 1814, John Fenton purchased land near present day West Mifflin from Andrew McIntyre for $1,000 cash. He built the first store in what is now West Mifflin Township and called it Fenton's Store. In 1824, he sold his interest in Fenton's Store to George McKinney who renamed it McKinney & Company stores until 1865 when it became The Citizens Bank of Western Pennsylvania. President James Kapp during World War I entered into an agreement with Alfred Sloan of General Motors to build plants at bloomingdale and Munhall for Sloan's GM Corporation plants that were then being built at Monroeville and Allentown (later hte Mellon plant). By 1927 there had been over 150 companies operating in the western region of the United States with 3 million employees engaged in manufacturing alone; this number has only grown since then! In 1868, Samuel Morse donated land six miles south of present day West Mifflin to create a new township - Greenville Township - nameakes after Samuel Morse himself! On November 15th 1868 by order of Judge Amos Kendall Wright four lots within Greenville Township were designated as "post office square" site within what is now part of WestMifflin Borough! The first post office was opened on December 1st 1870 by Pomeroy Waddell under direction from the Secretary of State!! In 1880 there were 97 inhabitants living in Greenville Township according to the US Census Bureau; however by 1890 this had increased to 231 residents! This increase can be attributed to two factors: 1) Increased production due to railroad construction throughout central PA during this time 2)Immigration resulting from changes occurring throughout Europe at this time such as revolutions/uprisings etc... Many Swiss immigrants who had come through Philadelphia made their way eastward via Pittsburgh where they found work on various railroads!!! One example was Bernhard Julius Fischer who worked for CSX Railroad between 1870-1872!!! After working his way up through company ranks he became general manager/CEO beginning in 1888!!!!!!!!! During his tenure locomotives began entering service running on steam rather than gasoline which resulted in savings$$!! Allentown Manufacturing Company also experienced growth during Fischer’s tenure including purchasing another 500 acres adjacent to their existing facility becoming known as “Allentown Plantation” later becoming known as “WestMifflin Area Incorporated” !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Priorities changed again when management learned about other upcoming wars coming our way (WWI), production stopped at Allentown and workers went home!!! However due credit crunch during WWII many allentown residents decided it would be best if they stayed put and invested some money back into their businesses instead!!! Today we still have evidence of these early days with numerous small businesses located right off main streets.....As we know today much has changed since those early days but our communityternally rooted culture remains largely unchanged.........
