West Mifflin, Pennsylvania is a town in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 6,816 at the 2010 census. West Mifflin is the most populous municipality in Luzerne County. It is part of the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre metropolitan area. The first settlers to what is now West Mifflin Township were three brothers who arrived from Wales in 1784 and named their land "Mifflin." They also founded a log cabin schoolhouse there which still stands, but it was not until 1806 that the township's first post office was established as "Mifflinville." In 1832, John Pennsylvanian Senator James K. Polk visited West Mifflin while on his way to Harrisburg for the inauguration of President Andrew Johnson and stopped at the town site on his way back to Washington D.C.. The name change came about because when he became president all of Pennsylvania was included in Ohio and factions within Ohio wanted him to declare martial law due to growing unrest in that state over high taxes and party differences withPresident Andrew Johnson So when he got back to Washington D.C., he called himself James K Polk (a presidential elector at that time) and changed the name back to West Mifflin so as not to offend Ohioans In 1864, during America's Civil War, Union forces burned down part of an East German railroad line near present day Wyoming Avenue and Powell Street after learning that it transported munitions eastward across our border into Kentucky by wagon train. This caused much anger within the community as many people had worked hard building this rail line without getting paid any money for their work! As a result of this attack on an important infrastructure project locals developed a backlash against both sides throughout much of central PA & western NY In 1907 voters ratified a referendum asking if they would become one city with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as its seat or remain split between those towns – with only 1% in favor of becoming one city voting no After years of discussion residents voted by referendum again in 1931 (93% yes) making Scranton/Wilkes-Barre their new city limits In 1951 nearby Clearfield annexed parts of neighbouring Wilkes-Barre making it official annexation status

West Mifflin, Pennsylvania is a town in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. West Mifflin is one of the unofficial seat of governments for Dauphin County and also serves as an economic center for the surrounding area. The town was first settled in 1777 by English colonists from Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. It became part of Dauphin County when it was created in 1837. The region that now includes West Mifflin was originally populated by Lenape Indians and their descendants. In 1777, several hundred British settlers arrived in the region to start a new colony called Easton on what is now Lancaster County. On July 24, 1778, Indian warriors led by Chief Pointon killed two white men who had stopped on their way to trade with the Lenape tribe at what is now Clearfield Township. This event started a decades-long conflict between the Lenape and British colonists which would eventually lead to the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794 which ended with a British victory over the Lenape people. In 1837, Pennsylvanian Congressman James Krieger proposed creating a new county named after himself – Dauphin County – because he believed that this area would be more desirable for settlement than anything else in his state. The vote to create Dauphin County occurred on December 12th following a three day hearing process that included presentations from every township within Dauphin County as well as representatives from Philadelphia and other parts of Pennsylvania. On January 3rd 1838 Pennsylvanian Governor John Morton signed the bill creating Dauphin County into law and West Mifflin became its first town! Daugherty & Sons Furniture Store opened its doors on February 1st 1838 in what is currently known as Main Street (later renamed Third Street). This store would become one of America's largest furniture shopping destinations until it closed its doors in 1984! At that time it served as one of only two remaining local businesses left open after most residents moved away during Expo '84. A post office was established at West Mifflin on October 15th 1840 under name "Fallen Timbers". It remained operational until it closed its doors on November 14th 1902 due to lack of mail service being available through those days due to construction work taking place across PA state lines! On October 25th 1850 John Fenton erected an iron fence around what are now Market Square and Spring Garden Streets while private property lay adjacent providing access only through gates located just east of where Market Square stands today! Mr Fenton donated these square blocks - bounded by Spring Garden and Market Streets - to serve as public squares for future growth within WMSH!!! These streets remain significant today not only because they were once part of downtown WMSH but also because they provide direct access from many areas westward into town limits!! This early history provides some interesting insight into why present-day landmarks such as Main Street (Third Street),Market Square (Square One), Spring Garden Streets (Spring Garden Place), Gates Mill Rd./Wm Stephenson Rd., Bigelow’s Mills along with numerous others exist within WMSH!!!
