On October 6, 1868, a white man named George Stephenson bought 2 shotguns from a blacksmith in West Mifflin for $10. He registered them with the Pennsylvania State Police and put them in his home. The guns were stored there until November 3 of that year, when they were sold to John Henson of East Liverpool for $50.Henson took the shotguns to work at his family's farm in West Mifflin. On December 5, 1868, he sold two of the shotguns to James McNulty of East Liverpool for $100. McNulty kept one shotgun at his farm and traded the other one to Joseph Whitehead of East Liverpool on February 11, 1869 for six rifles and four pistols. The handguns that Henson and Whitehead bought also became part of Stephenson's collection. In 1969, Whitehead donated all eight firearms plus three revolvers and two pistols to the National Firearms Museum in Lexington, Kentucky as part of their " American Pistol Collection."

In 1834, West Mifflin became an independent village when it joined forces with nearby Reading Township to form what is now known as Reading Borough. Despite this merger being contentious and causing some animosity between the two villages, both communities continued to thrive under their own respective governments until 1926 when they merged back intoReading Township once again under one government structure- that of Reading Borough Council members only! During World War II, many residents served in our nation's Armed Forces; examples include Sergeant John Ahern who enlisted as a Private in 1940 and rose through the ranks to become sergeant major at Fort Knox; Corporal Harry White who served in World War II wore number 8055PZT on his uniform belt which read "Home Front Services Post 248"; Second Lieutenant Jerome Smedley who fought across Europe during World War II wearing number 9574USN; First Lieutenant Forrest Shepherd who fought during Operation Market Garden wearing number 3582USN; Warrant Officer 2nd Class Darrell Fenton who served aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 61) during Operation Neptune's Spear dead or missing while deployed off Iraqi waters dressed as Rambo; Sgt[estimated] Edwin [ungendered name] Kappenbach Jr., Sergeant[estimated] Kenneth Prendergast Jr., Sergeant[estimated] Leroy Schellman - all serving anywhere from 1 day-14 days without leave due to service within our military! These men and women are products not just of America but also WestMifflin!
West Mifflin Township was organized on December 3, 1837 and named for the settlement of West Mifflin in Lancaster County. The first settlers in the township were John Hull and his family. The first post office in the township was established on January 15, 1838. The population of the township was 2,438 in 1850. On February 15, 1852, West Mifflin became a borough. On May 12, 1856, West Mifflin became a city.
