West Mifflin, PA is a town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. West Mifflin is bordered by Scranton to the north and east, Reading to the south and west, and Wilkes-Barre to the northwest. It is part of the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre metropolitan area. The tri-state region that makes up northeastern Pennsylvania was first settled by Europeans in this area during the 17th century. In 1699, Peter Minuit founded New Amsterdam onFeatured Island in what is now Lackawanna County. The Dutch colony was abandoned within a few years because of Native American attacks and disease outbreaks. A new company was founded in 1718 with land grants from King George II of Great Britain—the Susquehanna Company—giving rise to what would become West Mifflin Township. The township was organized on March 15, 1768 under act of Congress as part of a larger program called THE PROPERTY OF PUBLIC USE FIRST SETTLED IN THIS COUNTY BY MR. JOHN WESTMILL AND HIS BROTHER SAMUEL WESTMILL; NOW OWNED BY PEPPERON LEWIS EDWARDS Esq., Jno." In 1814 Delaware Quaker John Dickinson moved his family from Lancaster County to West Mifflin Township after purchasing 640 acres (246 hectares) there from local farmers for $10 per acre (4 pesos/ha). Dickinson became one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia on July 4 that year. He helped found Mechanics Institute (now Penn State University), which he endowed with more than $1 million dollars ($102 million in current currency) over its first hundred years! Dickinson's Legacy continues as Penn State University has more students than any other university or college system in America! He also founded Phillips Academy near where he lived until his death in 1876 at age 80! Pennsylvania statehood came about through a referendum on November 8th, 1837 when voters approved an amendment to the state Constitution that provided for statehood "in all cases where it may be desirable" - specifically including West Mifflin Township! On December 6th following passage by both houses of parliament resulting in ratification by 97%of those voting – President Andrew Johnson signed into law Proposal 1 creating Pennsylvania Colony Territory including West Mifflin Township! At its peak population numbering around 9200 people – including 3000 Indians – “Westminster” had become one of Canada’s most populous provinces… By 1870 however only 2200 people lived there; with large numbers removed either due to industrialization or military campaigns.. development then proceeded slowly as agricultural production became increasingly important.. industry began arriving only after World War II when new industries such as steel manufacturing were established.. today much smaller towns like Lackawanna Junction have continued strong communities while Westminster has experienced significant gentrification
West Mifflin was founded in 1768 by Captain James P. White and his family. The town became an important center for trade and commerce, and it experienced significant growth during the years following its incorporation. In 1854, West Mifflin was renamed to Wilkes-Barre after General John A. Wilkes, commander of the United States Army in the Mexican–American War. The name change reflected the growing prominence of the town within Pennsylvania's Republican Party scene. In 1907, Wilkes-Barre became the capital of Pennsylvania and West Mifflin joined as a borough within that city limits.
