In 1829, George Washington Smith settled in the area and started the paper mill. The townspeople built a small schoolhouse in 1830 and began to cultivate land. They also constructed a few homes. The first store opened in 1834 and by 1840, there were six stores operating in the community. By 1850, there were twelve stores and five hundred residents living in the town. The population grew rapidly during the late nineteenth century as new fields were developed and agriculture became more important to society. Businesses flourished around the start of World War I and after that, growth slowed until World War II when industry boomed again. Afterward, population levels gradually declined until they reached their current low point by 2000
