West Mifflin is a town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,866 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading–University City, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1793 by Captain John West and his family. The name was changed to West Mifflin in 1814 after Colonel John West's farm became part of the township. The first post office opened in 1824. In 1829, the Township of West Mifflin seceded from Berks County and formed its own government. In 1839, the town had 4 blacksmiths and 20 shoemakers working for it; by 1870 this had increased to 36 blacksmiths and 100 shoemakers working for it. By 1900, only 12 blacksmiths remained working for the town while all but one shoemaker had closed their businesses. In 1906, a cotton gin were built on what is now Main Street in West Mifflin with help from an anonymous donor who saw that this would be an important economic development for the area. This gin produced some of America's first cottonseed oil which helped make up for lack of other crops during World War II as crop production fell due to war-time rationing. Some of these early settlers are buried at Cemetery No 7 near Main Street today where there are also several Revolutionary War grave markers still standing from when those families lived there long ago: George Washington (1732-1801), Drury Lewis (1750-1812), James Forbes (1760-1825), Daniel Boone (1675-1742), Benedict Arnold (1722-1800). Today, many farmers still operate small farms around town as well as a few larger operations such as Bedminster Farms which grows chickens and pigs on 6 acres adjacent to Town Hall Square downtown; most people here still grow produce or sell items made from local materials like flowers or flour ensembles during summer months when prices are lower elsewhere due to high demand during harvest time etc., although major retail companies have started moving into newer neighborhoods closer to big city centers over recent years - see "Mall District" map below! As mentioned earlier: There has never been any real mall district within sight hereabouts - until recently!
