The first settler in what would become West Mifflin was John Brisbin in 1784. In 1824, John Prentice bought land from the government for £105 as a Township in Lancaster County. He named it after his family's ancestral home west of Philadelphia: Westminister Abbey. At that time Mechanicsburg was known as "the most important center of learning in Western Pennsylvania". From 1830 until 1840 it served as the seat of government for Lancaster County and also served as headquarters for several magazines published by newspapers such as The Patriot and The Econometrician. In 1837, James Buchanan offered to sell rights to what are now Monongalia Valley Park and West Mifflin Township to any person who could build a log cabin there within 10 years or purchase them from him at $10 per square foot (0.50 m²). By 1850, over 50 settlers had built cabins there - many were used by farmers who needed space during winter months when their barns were not accessible due to snowfall or ice protection measures employed by local landowners or state governments; these structures often remain standing today as part of landscape features such as hiking trails or nature reserves managed by private organizations like Penn State University's Joint History Museum/Dalton Woods Research Center ().
