West Mifflin, Pennsylvania is a town in Blair County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,797 at the 2010 census. West Mifflin is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become West Mifflin was John Fitzpatrick in 1795. By 1800, there were 10 families living in the town and it had a total population of 15. In 1824, the Township of Blair was organized within Westmoreland County and by 1830 there were over 100 residents intown.In 1834, the PA state government ceded all but 1 square mile (2 km²) of eastern Blair County to Lebanon Township for land granted by James Kapp as part of his donation to the PA state government to be used for education purposes only. This left about two-thirds of West Mifflin Village unincorporated and under local control with no official status or governance from above. In 1881 when Bethlehem Steel Corporation built its steel mill on lands that adjoined those given to Lebanon Township by Kapp, many residents followed suit and formed their own townships within Blair County - Westmoreland township being created on November 6th of that year with a total population of 3,099 people including 521 farmers and 1,814 manufacturing workers; East Penn township being created on December 2nd with a population of 463 people including 257 farmers and 1,711 manufacturing workers; Northumberland township being created on January 2nd with a population of 387 people including 151 farmers and 912 manufacturing workers; Cumberland township being created on February 12th with a population of 283 people including 147 farmers and 875 manufacturing workers; South Wales borough upon territorial annexation from Cumberland Township on May 25th with a total population OF 3,902 people including 2 farming families as well as 562 industrial operatives). These new townships were modeled after existing civil parish boundaries which had been established largely due to American whiskey regulations which required distilleries located more than three miles (5 km) from anybody's house to obtain an exemption from production taxes while still selling whiskey direct to consumers without going through brokers or warehouses etc.; this made it very difficult for small businesses like breweries which could not meet these requirements due to tight space constraints etc.). During World War II much activity took place at the steel mills so much so that most residents changed nicknames such as "the war factory" or "steelopolis". On October 16th 1944 both Bethlehem Steel Corporation & General Motors plc ceased operations within one day leaving over 5000 employees jobless & homeless across western PA following bombing raids throughout the area resulting in extensive damage done both inside and outside factories/yards leading up until 1969 when GM reopened its plant in Greensburg followingmarket restoration efforts having closed down during World War II because Steel Production rates had plummeted due mainly to competition from cast iron products made abroad although some older smelters still continued operation until 1974). The closure & demolition process began immediately prior to US involvement starting up again after 1945 notwithstanding offers from US companies for long term use once hostilities ended but no action taken despite numerous letters (& even an offer from then-Governor Tom Ridge himself) until 1987 when then-Municipal Judge Edward Fenton issued an injunction preventing further demolitions pending review by county commissioners who would have ultimate authority over zoning issues & thus preserved many historic buildings thereby creating unique neighborhoods around each blast site providing tourism opportunities today despite lackadaisical attitude towards preservationism among current officials. Today West Mifflin consists mostly of upscale housing developments close enoughto major urban areas yet maintaining significant rural character characterized by country roads running through central portions while smaller villages dottinglying peripheral ridges retain much traditional rural life remaining particularly evident among elderly residents who still live near their homes contradisturbed only by modern conveniences such as big box stores distant away from home compared with similar sized communities nearer urban areas where shops are clustered together making it easyto get assistance if needed whereas elders here can still rely heavilyon family members nearby should something go wrong

West Mifflin was founded in 1740 as a trading post on the Susquehanna River. It was named for Major John West, who had surveyed the area and donated land for the town. The first settler in West Mifflin was Nicholas Prentice. In 1824, the United States acquired what is now Pennsylvania from France in the Treaty of Paris. As part of that acquisition, the region around West Mifflin became part of what is now Delaware County. The community grew rapidly during the 19th century and by 1860, it had a population of 515 people. In 1881, West Mifflin moved to its current location at 901 Elm Street. During World War II, it served as a military airfield and barracks for soldiers stationed in nearby Reading and Allentown. After the war, West Mifflin declined but has since regained some of its former glory with a growing business sector and popular nightlife activities such as live music and beer festivals.
