West Chester, Pennsylvania is a small town in Pennsylvania that lies on the River Lehigh. The population was 9,453 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The name West Chester comes from the English word "Westerminster", which means "the northermost town". In 1681, when William Penn founded the colony of Pennsylvania, he named it for his brother-in-law Lord Westmorland. The original courthouse and jail were built in 1768 near what is now Market Street and Third Avenue. The courthouse burned down in 1837 but was rebuilt in 1841 on Fourth Avenue between Chestnut and Spring Streets. In 1894–95, West Chester became one of thirteen townships within Philadelphia County to receive annexation by the city ofPhiladelphia. As a result of this annexation, West Chester lost its role as an agricultural center while its population grew increasingly urban; however, it regained some of its rural character through shopping malls, factories and other businesses that sprang up around Interstate 76/I-76E (now known as Main Street), then called Ridge Road. The most recent Census taken in 2010 showed that West Chester's population had grown to 9,453 residents with a median household income of $55,813 (Upper Merion Township has a much higher median household income). Additionally there are many high school students living here who go onto attend nearby universities such as Drexel University or Temple University where they have opportunities for jobs after graduating from high school!
