West Chester, Pennsylvania is a city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 34,871 at the 2010 census. It is the ninth most populous city in Pennsylvania and the second most populous city in Greater Philadelphia. West Chester is also the seat of Lancaster County and has a population of 759,362 as of 2019. The area now comprising West Chester was once part of what is now York County. On July 1, 1784, John Adams established Tioga College there as one stop on his journey to found Yale University. The college became West Chester's first university when it opened its doors to students on October 15th, 1825. Significant events that occurred during this time include Allegheny County becoming a county on November 3rd, 1800; Benjamin Franklin being elected Vice President of the United States on November 3rd; and Colonel John Cadwallader Cooke becoming Mayor of West Chester on December 12th. In 1879-80 James Buchanan was re-electedGovernor for an eight-year term with 54% of the vote against Alfred Thayer Mahony who got 46%. In 1903–04 Judge John Fenton won election to be District Attorney for western Pa., serving from 1904 until his death in 1913 and then again from 1923 until he retired due to age - making him one of only two Americans ever elected statewide as District Attorney (the other being Harold Washington). Fenton was succeeded by Milton Steele who served from 1924 until his death in 1951 before going into private law practice. From 1951 until 1984 Jerry Ditka served as PA Governor with no run for office but instead focused largely on public policy issues such as education reform and infrastructure development including creating PennDOT which would become one of America's largest transportation agencies. Finally, George Voinovich took over from Ditka from 1984 until 1992 when he resigned after winning re-election with 51% majority over challenger Tom Ridge despite some irregularities surrounding his campaign finances

West Chester is a city in Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 24,813 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of West Chester County. West Chester was founded by Welsh immigrants in 1795 and became an incorporated town in 1853. The city was named after William Lawerence West, 3rd Baron Montgomery of Cheshire, who donated land to the town for Agincourt Battlefield Site National Monument in 1896. The first settler in what is now West Chester was James Fenton, who arrived on July 10, 1795 with his family from Northumberland, England. He purchased 1/4 mile (1 km) of land from John Armstrong for $20 and built a cabin on the site that would become known as Fenton's Station. In 1803, Fenton's nephew Jacob Brough erected a cabin on the same site and called it Brough's Station after himself and his brother-in-law about whom nothing is known but they may have been merchants or landowners early Residents of this area included David Browning (a Quaker), Peter Cooper (a German immigrant), George Washington Wynne (the son of British military officer Henry Wynne), John Armstrong (the father of John Armstrong Jr.), James Fenton Sr., Isaac Franksen, Nicholas Flannery and three others who came over on the "Mary Celeste" while transporting cargo to Philadelphia from Baltimore on December 14th 1800 under Captain George Walton In 1825 a group of men led by Andrew Mellon began purchasing land northward from Pittsburgh along the Schuylkill River. They named their purchase “West Chester” after their home town in Lancaster County where they had grown up. This initial purchase covered 6 square miles (15 km2). Their goal was to create a new community that would be centrally located between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia so that commerce could flow easily between these two cities and support both their economies
West Chester was once a part of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1768 and became a borough in 1809. The population grew rapidly during the 19th century, reaching more than 100,000 by 1900. However, West Chester's growth stopped abruptly during the Great Depression; it only increased by a few hundred people between 1940 and 1950. In recent years, however, Westchester County has annexed parts of West Chester including portions of Brightwood and Hillsboro.
