Armstrongs were one of early breweries to open shop in this region and are credited with helping develop Western Pennsylvania's brewing industry as well as creating some Ofallon Township landmarks such as Armstrong Park located near today's Second Avenue Bridge across I-95 (now US 13). In 1836, Isaac Backus bought 3/4 acre (193 feet) north side lot #2 (now Fourth Street) on Third Avenue from Samuel Appleton for $20 per acre ($2 per foot). As business grew Backus developed a brewery complex that included 2 brick blocks containing 6 rooms with 30 beer barrels each or 640 barrels total! The complex operated until 1919 when Prohibition led to a decline in business activity throughout most America which eventually caused Backus' assets to be seized by government officials under Anti-Trust laws administered by Sherman Antitrust Division head William McKinley during his presidency. In 1923 he sold all but 1 barrel (.32 oz) remaining output from his business operations at auction to two investors who organized into an company known as Armour Brewing & Malting Co., Incorporated! And so it began...The History Of Armour Brewing & Malting Co., Incorporated begins with Isaac Backus buying 3/4 acre (193 feet), north side lot #2 (now Fourth Street), on Third Avenue from Samuel Appleton for $20 per acre ($2 per foot).
