West Chester is located on the southern border of Philadelphia. The area that now makes up West Chester was first settled by Germans in 1795. These areas include Kensington Center/Chester Hill/Upper Darby Township (now Lansdale), Germantown/Woolridge/Middletown Township (now Monroeville), Italian Village/Mount Airy (now Bryn Mawr), Pinecrest Heights/Gordons Mills (now Allentown), Hunting Park (now Wynnefield), Overbrook Gardens (Now Norristown) and Passaic Hills/Westwick Manor (later parts of Eastwick). In 1838, when it became apparent that much growth would take place outsidePhiladelphia within its limits due to issues with infrastructure such as roads and railroads – specifically along Market Street – then-Mayor George Washington organized a group made up primarily of business people to come up with ideas for how to accommodate this growth within existing boundaries while still preserves some degree of local control over affairs such as zoning laws and fire Alarm Regulations etcetera etcetera etcetera etcetera). Accordingly, on July 4th, 1868, local residents voted unanimously to rename their Borough "West Chester". This name stuck even though not all residents agreed with it since there had long been questions about whether or not "west" could actually refer entirely to upper Darby Township proper or onlyinclude portions thereof; eventually leading more than half a century later when those same boundaries were redefined again Comprehensive Planner Harry Weinreb observed “When you go out into Society they call you 'west' all day long!” Although initially slow growing due mainly to lack OFHCA funding - until World War I when government restrictions began being relaxed - businesses soon started expanding throughout downtown westchester through absorption or annexation of adjacent municipalities; programs like "Operation Wacoal" providing job training for war related workers helped drive this growth forward between 1931-1945 inclusive As well as continuing suburbanization taking place across central Jersey through annexation additional municipalities such as Lawnwood Village / Mayfair Borough & Woodbridge Borough between 1950-1975 including Millville Borough which merged into Burlington County in 1975 thereby reducing overall population size by almost 20% but resulting increased economic activity . finally with deregulation & subsequent waves Of migration following WWII resultant INRIA consolidation bringing down prices resulted in rapid population growth once again culminating by 2000 with 60% increase over 1990s

In 1846, when Philadelphia changed its form from an agricultural district into a city it lost much of its rural character and most residents moved to the city limits, including those who live on Delaware Avenue today. The population of Westchester Borough increased rapidly during World War II due to the growth in munitions production within the borough’s borders. Many manufacturing plants were located within or nearWestchester Borough during World War II such as Alcoa (once located on Highbridge Road), Bethlehem Steel (now Consol Energy), Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), United Aircraft Corp., Pratt & Whitney, Singer Sewing Machine Co., General Electric Company (GE) and more than 100 other businesses which had their roots within or adjacent toWestchester Borough during World War II. The community developed quickly after 1945 due to new housing developments being erected throughout the borough as well as continued growth in industries throughout the postwar period which has contributed greatly to current day economic stability inWesterchester Borough
