West Chester, Pennsylvania is a small town located in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. As of the 2010 census, its population was 18,605. West Chester is the second most populous municipality in Philadelphia County and the fifth most populous municipality in Delaware County afterPhiladelphia, Camden, Wilmington and Newark. The settlement that would become West Chester was formed by refugees from Easton, Pennsylvania who left during the American Revolution. The first post office at West Chester was established on November 15, 1795. At its peak in 1837, it had a population of 10,000 people and was one of the largest towns in Philadelphia County with over 12 blocks square (240 acres). The decline of manufacturing industry in Philadelphia led to a decrease in population and business interests around West Chester until about 1950 when an increase in housing prices allowed for more dense development around downtown which has resulted in an even larger population today than when it first began to form back then. West Chester, Pennsylvania is a city in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 15,827 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Delaware County after Philadelphia. The area now comprising West Chester was first settled by German colonists in 1795 and became part of the Kingdom of Prussia following its defeat by Austria in 1815. A new borough was created at the junction of what are now North and South streets on May 7, 1836 as part of a movement to create more centralized government in the region. The name "West Chester" originated with a survey organized by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail to locate a terminus for his Western Union Telegraph Company's line from Ft Wayne (Indiana) to Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania). When the company decided on Philly as its terminus, they changed their minds and applied for an incorporation charter that would have given them control over all of Delaware County. Although it was granted on November 12, 1837, it never got off the ground due to strong opposition from Mayor John Armstrong and other members of council. In 1839-40 two major floods destroyed much of downtown West Chester but four years later construction began on what would become one of America's largest brick yards - then known simply as "The Brick Yard". At this time many large corporations were located along York Street including Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company, Citizens National Bank and First National Bank. In 1906 steel magnate Andrew Carnegie donated land adjacent to his Allegheny Mining Works for use as a public park which eventually became known as Carnegie Park. During World War II West Chester served as Headquarters for Third Army Divisional Area No 5 which occupied Monroeville during 1942-1943 and also supported Operation Torch in early 1944 when Allied forces invaded French Morocco under General Patton’s Dinant Commandos. After hostilities ended West Chester reverted back to its pre-war role as an agricultural center with businesses such as DuPont Brothers Chemical Company continuing until 1990 when they relocated out of state into Wilmington, Delaware because of economic concerns about pollution from their facilities there. However some smaller businesses continue to operate today such as PNC Financial Services Corporation which occupies space currently occupied by Sears Holdings stores across three levels; namely One Financial Plaza (formerly Sears Tower), Willis Tower I/II (formerly Home Depot I/II), andNAI Towers III/IV (former K Mart).
