West Chester, Pennsylvania is a city in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 992 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. West Chester was founded in 1768 as a small frontier town on the Allegheny River by Loyalists fleeing British rule in North America. The city's first mills were organized by Reverend Samuel Morse and others in 1814. By 1924, when the statistical area for which West Chester was included in Erie County was reorganized into three boroughs – Erie, Lawrenceville and Meadville – it had long since ceased being an agricultural center due to overproduction caused by changes in farming methods brought about by new technology such as irrigation systems. West Chester is a city in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, located on the eastern border of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and on the southern edge of York County. The first settlement in what would become West Chester was founded by German immigrants in 1711 as Wexford Township, located east of Philadelphia on land that had been part of Huntingdon Township since 1682. West Chester was first settled in 1751 by a group of French Canadians. The area now known as West Chester was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. In 1814, the United States acquired control of the area and it became part of Pennsylvania. In 1876, West Chester became an independent city.
