It is located on the eastern edge of Philadelphia, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Center City and 30 miles (48 km) north of Pittsburgh. The original inhabitants of what is now West Chester were Lenape Indians. The first European to settle in the area was Captain John Smith who explored the Delaware River Valley in 1608. In 1795, General George Washington set up a military post here during his defense of Philadelphia against British forces. After independence from Great Britain was gained in 1776, settlers began moving into this area and founded the town of West Chester on November 7, 1800. The present-day town was formed from parts of two adjoining towns: Easton and Doylestown. On December 12, 1834, President Andrew Jackson signed an act creating Lebanon Township as part of Bucks County effective January 1, 1835. This act also created West Chester Township which became its permanent incarnation on December 12th following approval by a vote by residents at a meeting held at First Baptist Church on December 10th. At that time west side ran along College Avenue while east side ran along Trusty Street During World War II many industries such as aluminum production took place in the nearby Beavercreek Industrial Area; however warfare did not center around this community but rather southeastern PA communities nearPhiladelphia due to strategic bombing raids conducted by RAF Bomber Command over Germany throughout 1944/1945
