He founded a mill on the Susquehanna River which he named "Walton's Mill". Walton Curse refers to an incident that took place there in 1827 when three men were accused of stealing flour from Walton's mill; one man died as a result and two others were sentenced to transportation for life without parole. In 1834, John Stephenson bought a tract of land east of town from Amos Walton and began building him a gristmill which he naming "John Stephenson's Mill". The mill continued operations until 1893 when it burned down due to fire caused by lightning strike.

Waynesboro is a historic town in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,153 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Waynesboro were French colonists who founded the village of Beechfield on October 7, 1755. The town was chartered as a borough on March 25, 1768. In 1815, part of what is now East Liberty Township was annexed into Waynesboro and it became its own township again on December 14, 1834. On February 26, 1839, the portion of East Liberty Township that included Waynesboro was also annexed into Clay County and became known as Clay Borough. On February 28th of that year petitions were filed to create a new government for Waynesboro which failed because no one wanted to move from their existing government and accept an offer from neighboring Uniontown to do so. The borough's only resident until 1861 was John Prentice who had arrived in 1840 from Ohio with his family settling near Snyder’s Ferry on the Allegheny River. In 1863 he moved his family westward to Aliquippa and then southward to Raystown before finally moving back east to plot his homestead along Beaver Creek just north of current day Route 309 (now part of Mellon Park). In 1886 he sold most of his holdings within Raystown borders including his home plantation east side along Beaver Creek (now part of Mellon Park) for $2 per acre cash value - making him one of first farmers in this area to engage in land speculation after independence from Great Britain. He remain active until 1949 when he passed away at age 83 years old having never relinquished any control over or interest in his land holdings located within present day Mellon Park boundaries including those located just east side along Beaver Creek as well as portions west side along Old US 219 (now I-279) once encompassing much more than what is currently within Mellon Park limits including much undeveloped agricultural land adjacent both sides of Beaver Creek dating back several hundred years prior thereto! The population increased rapidly following the American Revolution, and in 1820, the first post office was established in Waynesboro. The town experienced rapid growth during the 19th century as a result of its location on the main route between Philadelphia and Baltimore. The town remained an important commercial center until it lost its status as a principal city in the late 19th century because of its lack of infrastructure and development opportunities. However, Waynesboro has seen recent revival since 2000 as a cultural center for eastern Pennsylvania.
