Waynesboro is a small town in southwestern Pennsylvania, located about 25 miles west of Philadelphia. The population was 8,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Snyder County. The area that now makes up Waynesboro was settled by Europeans in the early 1700s. The first permanent settler in Waynesboro was John Fenton, who arrived in 1798 and built a cabin on the banks of the Scioto River. By 1802, four other settlers had also moved to what is now Waynesboro: William Cochran, James Palfrey, Daniel Hays and John Wherter. The first mill in Waynesboro was built in 1814 by Alexander McNaught. In 1828, George Wray became its first owner and operated it until it burned down in 1829. Around this time, Methodists began to settle in Waynesboro and started building churches there. In 1830, James Boggs acquired land east of present-day Route 322 for a new cotton plantation called "Bogue's Mill." The mill was begun operation but soon went out of business because of low yields from the cotton crop. In 1836–37, David Jourdan bought Bogue's Mill from Boggs and continued operations until his death three years later; he bequeathed it to his son Domingo Jourdan Jr., who ran it until 1984 when it passed into private ownership again and reopened as an agricultural museum known as "David Jourdan Mills." Waynesboro is part of the Philadelphia–Reading–Camden metropolitan area.Waynesboro was founded in 1792 by John Waynes and his brother-in-law Nicholas Slocum as a small farming community on the Susquehanna River near where present day Route 9 intersects Interstate 95. In 1814, the town became known as "TheBirthplace of American Liberty." In 1847, Waynesboro became an incorporated borough when it amalgamated with nearby Easton to form what is now Butler County. The name change was due to objections from Easton's residents that they were considered part of their former township while Waynesboro residents claimed they were born there and had done all their shopping there. On February 15, 1897, the Borough Council voted 10 to 1 to rename Waynesboro "Liberty Township". This event helped start what would become one of America's most vibrant downtown areas with numerous stores and businesses located on Market Street between Second and Third Streets. In 1957, Waynesboro merged with adjoining Chestnut Hill to form what is now known as Pennsbury Township (the original Chestnut Hill trustees did not want this merger). Waynesboro has seen many changes over its history including becoming an open-air markettown in the 1950s; being annexed by Centre City in 1980; losing its status as a borough in 1997; becoming part of the Philadelphia–Reading–Camden metropolitan area in 2007; and finally reverting back to its original name after mergers with Pennsbury Township and Centre City. Waynesboro is a town in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census. Waynesboro was founded in 1795 by Colonel John Armstrong and his brother James. It was named for General Lafayette and General Washington. The first school in Waynesboro was opened in 1800 by Reverend Ebenezer Griggs. The present-day high school building was built in 1907 on the site of the old Academy School. In 1831, Waynesboro became part of the new Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a result of the Unionist victory over Federal forces at Gettysburg. As part of this process, Waynesboro became one of three towns located within Cumberland County; the other two being Honesdale and West Mifflin. In 1867, Waynesboro had its own post office which continued until it closed on October 15, 1912. The last mail delivered to Waynesboro were advertisements from local merchants for items such as flour and hay raised by their animals on nearby farms that were no longer being sold because USPS stopped delivering to Waynesboro due to concerns about horse manure spread across roadways during dry weather conditions caused by wet winters earlier that year. Waynesboros original grocery store (now known as "The Cheese Shop") opened on Main Street in 1892; it operated until 1954 when it moved to what is now 6th Street NE adjacent to the High School football stadium complex (then known as Central High School). In 1955, when Central High School merged with Forest Hills Township's high school to form Delaware Valley Community College (DVC), The Cheese Shop relocated back onto Main Street and reopened under new ownership as Delaware Valley Grocery & Dairy Ltd., still operating today except for major renovations completed in late 2009 which included reopening portions of both stores into one large space including an addition out back which housed a bar/restaurant inside while also allowing access through an all-encompassing glass fronted entrance lobby directly outside each storefront window) This renovation also included installation of a modern oven/grill system complete with multiple cooking areas upstairs and lower levels beneath one large roof permitting open air dining above retail level just like those found at many modern convenience stores.) "The Cheese Shop", originally located on Main Street between 7th and 8th Streets NW near where present day 14th & Market Streets NW currently stand after years without repair or use since closing down decades ago during prohibition era when alcohol not allowed anywhere near schools made it difficult for students or staff even bring food inside either store... The township was organized on November 3, 1814, and named after General James Hays. A post office was established at Waynesboro on December 5, 1816. In 1867, the population of Waynesboro amounted to just over 100 people; by 1914 it had grown to more than 1,000 people. The area that now includes Waynesboro began developing as a agricultural community during the early 1800s; due to its location near water bodies and railroad tracks, the town became an important hub for agricultural production throughout much of its history. During World War II, Waynesboro played an important role in the Allied effort against Nazi Germany; many residents worked on munitions factories or served in military forces stationed within the town. In 1945, when peace returned to Europe, many of those wartime jobs disappeared and most residents left for other parts of Pennsylvania or America.
