He renamed it Stephensonstown and developed it into an agricultural town with stores and homes. By 1840, he had also built a steamboat harbor on the western bank of the Monongahela River. In 1845, Nicholas Girard acquired additional land east of present day Main Street and began to build a community called Girardstown. He named his new settlement "Waynesboro" after General Washington's birthplace in Betterton Township, Massachusetts. The first house was erected in 1847 and the first store opened in 1850. The town quickly became an important center for trade with its location on the river and access to resources such as coal and timberline

Waynesboro, PA is a small town in Snyder County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. Waynesboro was founded in 1824 by Captain John Way and his wife Sarah. The name means "place of the woods." The first settler in Waynesboro was John Hays who arrived in 1824. Hays' family also founded what is now known as the Waynesboro Historical Society Museum which opened its doors to the public in 1954. In 2009, Waynesboro became an official community of Snyder County and has since experienced steady growth with over 2,000 residents. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant visited Waynesboro on a camping trip and recommended that the then-new Pennsylvanian Railroad be built through the town so that goods could be transported between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh easily. By 1870, more than 100 stores had been established in Waynesboro; by 1890 it had become one of the most important lumber towns in Pennsylvania thanks to its excellent timber resources. During World War II (1939-1945), many businesses closed due to wartime restrictions but many others flourished due to their military connections such as Don Armstrong's Armstrong Army Ammunition Plant which manufactured shells for both Allied and Axis forces during World War II. After hostilities ended, Armstrong's plant transitioned from manufacturing ammunition to providing engineering services such as construction management and environmental consulting throughout Greater Pittsburgh area until he sold it to Brownells Incorporated in 2003 for $175 million USD. This gave way to another era for Armstrong's company when it merged with Philips Corporation effective January 1st 2006 becoming Phillips Military Engraving Company LLC (PMEC).
