Waynesboro is located in Duffield Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. It was founded by John Waynes in 1795. The first store in Waynesboro was built on the current site of the DuPont factory in 1826. In 1847, the town was renamed to honor General George Washington and it became a borough in 1907. The population of Waynesboro increased from 1,500 to over 10,000 during the late 19th century and early 20th century. During World War II, Waynesboro produced munitions for the war effort. After the war ended, traffic congestion caused by small businesses closed down and consolidation took place within the community. In 1970, a new high school was built and replaced an earlier structure which had been used as a barracks for soldiers during World War I and World War II. The original building still stands today and is used as a museum for local history.
