In 1853, Waynesboro, Pennsylvania was founded by John F. Brown and James M. Kelley. The first gun in Waynesboro was a shotgun made of hickory wood. It had a stock of three feet four inches long and could fire six rounds per minute. In 1855, the town's first rifle was manufactured by Jacob Hinkle & Sons at the intersection of Main Street and Third Street. It had a barrel of eighteen inches and could shoot thirty-five rounds per minute. In 1861, Waynesboro became the location for the first public school in Pennsylvania which taught students from Kindergarten to Twelve years old. The new school was located on Centre Avenue in downtown Waynesboro. In 1865, Waynesboro got its own post office with name of "Waynesboro." The American Civil War began in 1861 and ended in 1865. During the war, many men from Waynesboro served in various units such as the 7th Regiment Pennsylvanian Volunteer Infantry (later known as First Brigade Delaware Volunteer Infantry), Company K (1st Battalion) 1st Cavalry Regiment United States Volunteers (Ulysses S Grant’s command during his later campaigns), Sixth Regiment Ulysses S Grant’s Kansas National Guard infantry regiment (the “Buffalo Soldiers”), Ninth Regiment Pennsylvania State Militia Infantry unit “Crazy Horse” under Colonel George Armstrong Custer were among those who fought at Appomattox Court House surrendering their army to Confederate General Robert E Lee on April 9th 1865 near Lexington Virginia After the end of World War I there were large waves of people coming into Waynesboroug

However, due to increasing economic development and competition from larger towns in the area, Waynesboro struggled during the 1840s and 1850s. In 1858, however, local officials successfully petitioned Pennsylvania Governor Andrew Johnson to annex Waynesboro into newly formed Allegheny County; this helped to revitalize the community and spur growth in business and industry. By 1860, Waynesboro had reached its current size with a population of over 5,000 residents. During Reconstruction-era America, Waynesboro experienced significant growth as a black American community; it became one of the most vibrant African American communities in Western Pennsylvania. After World War II ended and ethnic tensions increased throughout Western Pennsylvania%, waynesboroughers transitioned from a largely white Republican majority to an increasingly Democratic demographic during that time period. In recent years, however, there has been growing support for retaining traditional ways of life within their own community while also expanding opportunities for all individuals within it.[1]
