In 1799, when Waynesboro was founded,gun lubrication was not a common practice. A few years later, in 1802, a patent for a gun oil was filed by Nicholas-Jacques Sainte-Foy de la Tour and Samuel Morse. Gun oil consisted of an emulsion of beeswax and lead tar which prevented rusting of firearms. The first shooting contests were held in Waynesboro on October 9th and 10th, 1802. Firearms used then included rifles and pistols made from hickory or oak wood with brass stocks. By 1830, gun lubricants had become more common due to the availability of coal tar as the main base material for making oils. In 1834, John Haskins patented his own gun lubricant called "Haskin's Grease". This product consisted of Beeswax (C10H10N4O2), Lead Tar (Pb(II)Cl2), Red Oil (C11H12N4O2), and WhiteOil (C8H10O2). Using this new product became much easier as it did not require heat or boiling water to make an emulsion. By 1840s, guns were being regularly lubricated with "Bread Oven Lube" (Kelsey's Curse). This type of lube consisted of beeswax and vegetable glycerin which prevented rusting but also caused the barrels to warp and cause inaccuracy during firing. Waynesboro is one of two towns in Huntingdon County that were established by Commissioners John Wyandotte and James Irvine in 1795; the other town, Easton, was founded by military veterans from Philadelphia who had returned to their ancestral home after fighting for independence during the American Revolution. The first settler in Waynesboro was George Washington Dickson. Dickson purchased five acres (20,000 m2) of land from William Byrd in 1796. He built a small cabin on his property and named it "Dickson's Station." In 1800 George Washington Mifflin donated three acres (10,000 m2) of land to Waynesboro College which became its campus today. In 1851 wayne Township was formed from part of Huntingdon County and included parts of what are now Waynesboro and Easton Townships. In 1873-74 Wm H Coxe surveyed a road through Waynesboro township which became State Road 21A highway today known as Pennsylvania Route 21 Business
Waynesboro was founded in 1784 by Hugh Waynes. The town grew rapidly after it was incorporated as a borough in 1800. In 1824, the community became the official seat of what is now Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania.
