As of the census[1] of 2000,[2] there were 3,611 people,[3] 2,857 households,[4] 1,584 families residing in the township: 5% were married couples living together, 10% had a female householder with no husband present; 31% were non-families; 25% of all households were made up of individuals; 11% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older; 7% had someone age 16 or younger who was resident alone; and 8% were non-families by choice.[5] The average household size was 2½[6][7][8] persons[9], there were 1123 housing units at an average densityof .27 per square mile (100/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 98% White European American,[10][11][12][13][14] 2%, African American/African American[15], 0%, Native American/Native American [16], 6%, Asian[17], 3%, from other races,[18],[19],[20],[21], and 1%.

Waynesboro was formed in 1851 when the land of what is now Waynesboro and Robinson Township were combined to form the new borough. The name originated from pioneer John Wayne who settled there in 1810. The first white person to live in Waynesboro was James Baldwin who arrived there in 1785. He founded a small trading post on the side of a hill near present-day Market Square. In 1851, following the American Civil War, Waynesboro became part of Philadelphia because it remained loyal to the Union while other parts of Pittsburgh sided with Confederate General Robert E Lee. In 1865, after slavery was abolished throughout Pennsylvania, many black residents moved into Waynesboro because they found free housing available there only for white people. By 1870, most blacks had either left or been integrationized into their original societies and businesses within Philadelphia society. Some African Americans did remain in Wayesville until its incorporation into Philadelphia as well as until 1910 when all African Americans were required to leave their community by local ordinance due to Jim Crow segregation laws then still operative throughout much of America's South and West at that time. After World War II ended and traditional industries shifted towards service economy growth withinPhiladelphia city limits (the Rust Belt), waylessness developed as an alternative low-wage industry which attracted immigrants from Eastern European countries during this period - primarily Poles and Slovaks looking for work opportunities outside traditional wage brackets but without benefits or retribution from UAW organizers who viewed these workers as competitive threats rather than allies against Detroit auto companies engaged in price fixing schemes nationwide at that time). Eventually this type of economic activity transformed into what is now known as "illegal employment."
