After years of effort by community leaders, construction began on the school in 1903 and it opened for students in September 1907. The high school has been attended by students from Waynesboro since then. The presence of a high school has helped keep things close to home for many people in Waynesboro over the years; parents have more opportunity to be with their children during school hours which allows them to stay active in their communities outside of work or study opportunities. In addition, businesses located near the high school have been able to provide affordable education and training for local workers through apprenticeship programs that are offered throughout most weeks during term time (except holidays). One way that Waynesboro has preserved its culture is through annual events such as "Quaker Days" which celebrates religious freedom principles taught at local schools; " dances" (the last two being held on Saturday nights); "Families reunion weekend"; "Old Order Feasts", an event honoring traditional values within the community; and "Christmas".
