Waynesboro, Pennsylvania is a small town in central PA that dates back to the 17th century. The town was originally named Germantown after Colonel John Waynes who donated the land for the community. Waynesboro was incorporated as a borough on February 22, 1853, and became a city on January 1, 1903. The population of Waynesboro was 10,711 at the 2000 census. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Waynesboro in 1681 and founded an outpost called Whitehall on the site of present-day Germantown. In 1749, Captain James Mercer purchased 640 acres of land in what is now Waynesboro from the Susquehanna Company for £4 per acre. The captain built a home known as Mercer's Manor which he used as his headquarters until his death in 1775. In 1810, Captain John Piercy moved from Lancaster County to purchase land at present-day Waynesboro from Jonathan Chambers for £10 per acre. He began developing the property into farmland which he named Piercy Township. In 1834, Congress passed an act designating way stations along the newly completed Erie Canal which would provide transportation opportunities for farmers and laborers throughout Pennsylvania and New York City. By 1840, there were five way stations located in PA alone: Crawfordville (in Armstrong County), Philadelphia (in Clearfield County), Altoona (in Summerdale Township), Pittsburgh (in Lawrence County), and Erie (at Canonsburg). In 1861, during American Civil War hostilities between Confederate States of America and Union forces raged across much of Pennsylvania including Wayne township where battle lines were drawn near present-day Waynesboro but no actual fighting took place due to factors such as lack of resources or military positioning within Wayne township itself; however skirmishes did take place around Canonsburg vicinity junction with Armstrong County line just north of modern day Manchestertown Roadsteads village within Wayne township proper; alluding to then current location Of Old Man's Cave Resort area located just east/northeast corner Of Armstrong & Canonsburg Counties line close To scenic Monongahela River farmlands today Google Maps map) Confederate forces barracks were situated on ridge overlooking Main Street W edge Of town off Route 309 south side
