In 1922, John Fenton established Fenton's Paper Mill which continued operating until 2005 when it went out of business due to competition from online mills and other paper producers statewide. In 1984, Wawa opened its first store north of Pittsburgh inside an old military base just east of town square called "the Triangle". Today Wawa operates over twenty stores throughout Pennsylvania including eight located within two miles of Waynesboro proper (including one on Route 27).

The merger created an even more expansive township than before with a total area of over 130 square miles (293 square kilometers). The primary economic activity in Wayne Township is agriculture; however, there are also numerous small businesses located throughout the township. One popular attraction within Wayne Township is its many parks and playgrounds which provide recreational opportunities for residents and children alike.
