Washington Township, Pennsylvania was first established in 1795. In 1801, it became a part of the newly created Washington County, Pennsylvania. The county was organized on February 14, 1802. On November 3, 1824, the township lost its own government to become one of the six townships in Washington County under the jurisdiction of the new state legislature. It remained a part of that legislature until 1827 when it joined with other western PA townships in creating the new Lawrence County, PA.
