At that time, scientific instruments and devices were used to study the natural world and make observations that would later be used to improve agriculture, navigation, and other industries. One such instrument was a microscope, which was first developed in Britain in 1784. By 1827, American scientists had started making microscopes with various lenses and attachments (such as a stage) so they could be used in research labs. In 1859, a group of Philadelphia businessmen founded the Optical Society of America (OSA), which provided financial support for science researchers at universities across the United States. The OSA also began developing glass standards for optics- essential for making microscopes more accurate and reliable. In 1865, Ulysses S. Grant became president of the United States and he made it his mission to promote science and technology throughout the country. This led to new opportunities for optic manufacturers who were able to useGrant’s patronage to increase sales outside of America’s traditional markets. In 1868, Congress passed an act supporting optical industry development within its borders by authorizing appropriations for “the erection or improvement of factories for making telescopes and other astronomical objects” within five years. The act also created land grants To individual inventors who submitted proposals demonstrating how their invention would improve astronomy or agriculture domestically or abroad. In 1872–1873, OSHA created regulations related to workplace hazards associated with optical equipment manufacturing processes- one of which required companies employing 50 or more workers to install preventative safety features like fire resistant materials and fall arrest systems on scaffolds used during manufacture). As manufacturing techniques improved over time, so too did optics production in Washington County; however, there were still some lingering challenges face by local businesses when it came time to adopt modern methodsologies like automated production lines and data entry clerks using computers instead of human assistants during product assembly/testing/shipment process). In 1874, he moved to a larger location on Second Street where he continued to offer optical services until his death in 1920. Dr. Julius Epstein started his own optometry business in 1897 and eventually became one of the most well-known and respected optometrists in the United States. He was also responsible for developing the first eye chart which is still used today. In 1922, Dr. Harry Kessler opened his own office at 222 First Avenue in Philadelphia and soon became one of the leading ophthalmologists in America. He is considered the father of modern ophthalmology and is credited with developing several important medical technologies including cataract surgery and laser vision therapy.
Washington Township is a township in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Washington Township was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it for George Washington, the first President of the United States. The name probably comes from an Algonquian word meaning "place where water flows." In 1792, surveyor John Forbes discovered coal seams near present-day Washington and recommended that it be developed as a anthracite mine. However, it wasn't until 1826 when James Furness founded the town of Monroeville in order to provide transportation for miners working in the coal fields. Washington Township was organized on March 10th, 1827 under the Pennsylvania General Assembly's Act of June 24th, 1827. At that time there were only three hundred and thirty-six people living within its borders: forty-eight men and twenty-two women (the largest number of any township in Pennsylvania). The first school house was built on Lower Greenville Road just north of present day Monroeville during 1800s by Reverend Samuel Goodloe who also raised chickens and provided milk to local farmers on his farmstead located east of Greenville Rd today known as Goodloe’s Farmhouse Museum & Park which still stands today! Reverend Goodloe served as superintendent from 1800-1801; he also taught school from log cabin until brick building became available along with a large barn which housed twelve cows!Today’s museum has many interesting items such as postcards, photos and other memorabilia about Rev Samuel Goodloe including 3 busts found inside museum! In 1830 residents voted to name their new town Monroeville after James Furness who had donated land for the community; this vote helped make Washington Township one of several townships formed around Pittsburgh following its incorporation into Pennsylvanian territory on December 12th 1828 officialy becoming part of Allegheny County on January 1st 1830! On October 11th 1840 Abraham Lincoln visited Washington Township while campaigning for election to become US President over rival candidate Andrew Johnson according to some sources Abraham Lincoln stopped at Lower Greenville Rd & School House Square before continuing his campaign rally at Ford’s Theatre across Market Square later that night. Regardless if Abe actually stopped or not our plaque still remains next door at Ford’s Theatre square today

He also played a major rolein establishing new schools and churches in Philadelphia and elsewhere throughout America during his time aspresident; these additions helped contribute to the city's burgeoning economy during this time period."
