In 1920, Pittsburg merged with York to form Mercer County and Washington reverted to its original name once again. The history of Washington began with Indian Removal during the 19th century. A group of British colonists led by Colonel John Forbes set out from their settlement at Fort Duquesne on October 12, 1776, to remove all Native Americans living within three miles (5 km) of Philadelphia. The campaign resulted in more than 70 deaths and many injuries; it remains one of history's most infamous massacres. By 1800 only about 20 families lived in what is now downtown Pittsburg while 350 natives still lived off-the-land on hunting grounds around what is now West Beaver Street and North Fifth Avenue. In 1801 President James Kenedy issued an executive order that ordered all Native Americans living within two miles (3 km) of Philadelphia must be removed or face punishment including imprisonment and death penalty if they didn't leave voluntarily or were forced out by force or violence from white settlers under pressure from Ulysses S Grant's War Department; this event is commonly known as "The Great Trek." The Order also established a system whereby Indian traders could purchase land east of Lebanon Valley for $2 per acre ($10 per hectare). On February 9th 1830 Cherokees ceded their southeastern corner extending upriver about 20 miles (32 km) eastward lying along present day Butler Pike , just southwest of Pittsburgh During this time many refugees flowed into eastern PA due to economic hardship brought about primarily by goldrushes that commenced around 1829 followed soon thereafter by manufacturing sites associated with coal mining operations especially those situated along Monongahela River valley floor subsequently developing commercial areas stretching from Butler Pike northwesterly past Goodyear Ford thence easterly past Lycomington until reaching our current day border with Ohio running westerly along Allegheny Mountains cresting just beyond Carnegie Mellon University campus boundaries where Interstate 376 begins
