The history of the target shooting industry in Washington, Pennsylvania date back to 1892. The first shooting range was opened in a small town on the Susquehanna River by Capt. John Grier and his assistants. Captain Grier'srange was quickly followed by two others, one in Reading and one in Scranton. By 1904, there were five ranges open in the state of Pennsylvania. The early years of target shooting were very dangerous due to the fact that most shooters were unaccustomed to using firearms and frequently killed or wounded their fellow shooters. However, with quick learning and better safety practices, target shooting became much more manageable over the years. In 1907, Col. Harry Laughlin organized a statewide rifle tournament which featured some of the best shooters from across the United States. In 1911, Congress passed The National Firearms Act which made it easier for people to buy and own firearms. This act also allowed Targets to become licensed dealers and sell ammunition directly to consumers instead of through wholesalers like they had been doing for many years prior. As gun ownership became more widespread throughout America, so too didtarget Shooting activity increase significantly within Pennsylvania itself- specifically in Washington County where Targets enjoyed an especially robust presence during this time period (particularly due to their affiliation with Colonel Harry Laughlin). Through strong marketing efforts by Targets as well as word-of-mouth marketing campaigns,Target shooters all across western Pennsylvania developed proficiency at this unique sport which had only just begun blooming into its current form!
