Washington is a town in Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Altoona-Johnstown-Altoona, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is included in the Philadelphia-Allentown-Jersey City, PA Combined Statistical Area. Washington was founded in 1753 as a small town on the Susquehanna River by German immigrants and was named for George Washington, who had come to America in 1732 as an exile from his native Prussia. The first courthouse and school were built there in 1757; it became a borough in 1829. The town was incorporated as a city on December 12, 1907. In 1916 Washington hosted the dedication of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial Bridge over the Susquehanna River; it has been called one of America's "must see" tourist destinations since its construction. The area around Washington has been inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years; Potawatomi Indians lived nearby until they were displaced by settlers in the early 1800s. In 1753 John Forbes erected a trading post here on land he had purchased from the Comanche people near what is now Altoona. In 1800 Benjamin Franklin visited Washington while he was governor of Pennsylvania and conferred with tribal leaders about boundary lines between their countries that would lead to future conflicts over lands within those borders. A series of battles between American Indian groups and white colonists followed along these boundaries until 1814 when all but two hundred miles (300 km) of this frontier line were sold to Ulysses S Grant for $15 million dollars after passage through Congress under President James K Polk's executive order known as "The Great Sioux Trace". This allowed businesses such as agriculture, lumbering, mechanics shop, etc., to thrive without competition or interference from city-dwellers who were only interested in grabbing land or jobs for themselves. During this time period most people in America lived within one mile (1 kilometer) of their home or workplace which helped keep things simple and efficient while allowing farmers access to markets outside Philadelphia while also providing a necessary infrastructure for businesses to function including roads, bridges and schools. In 1875, Congress passed the Homestead Act which gave citizens living on public land rights to purchaseholds totaling about 4 million acres (16 square kilometers). This act helped stimulate economic growth throughout Pennsylvania as more people began moving into the area seeking new opportunities after seeing how easy it would be to take advantage of these rights. As a result, many homes were built along major highways such as I-80 which linked PA with Michigan and Ohio; these developments can still be seen today near junctionpoints such as Kelly Drive eastbound exit 615/I-80 westbound exit 3754 miles east of Pittsburgh
