In 1812, John Brown & Co., a London-based company began manufacturing rifle barrels at their shipyards on Delaware Avenue near Third Street in Philadelphia. This factory continued production until 1826 when it too closed its doors due to financial problems. During the Revolutionary War period (1775-1783), gun barrel production increased significantly as militias turned to arms to fight against British troops occupying America. Gun barrel manufacturing resumed after the war thanks to advances in technology and organized labor; however, it would not reach its pre-war level until after World War II when mass production methods became available courtesy of American companies such as Colt Incorporated and Remington Arms Corporation
