Washington Township is a township in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading Borough section of Reading, Pennsylvania. The first settlers in Washington Township were James and Mary Brown who arrived in 1795. They built a log cabin on the east side of the Monongahela River. In 1802 they moved to what is now Ottawa County and started a small farmstead with their four children. James died in 1804 and Mary married John Snyder who also came to America that year. They had two children: Josephine born in 1805 and John born in 1807. John Snyder died young at age 21 leaving his wife with six children: James (1810-1878), George (1812-1901), Catharine A., Amanda (1814-1897), Laura (1816-1900), Alfred S., andEdward M.( 1830-1906). In 1840 Washington Township was organized as part of Berks County by an act of the Pennsylvania General Assembly under which it became one of twelve townships statewide created as part of the Pennsylvanian Reform Act of 1839. At this time it consisted only of those portions of Berks County east of the Monongahela River where land could be found free from duties or other obstacles to settlementincluding Beaverdam Creek which lay within its boundaries; all other territory was subject to local control through special sessions held at Hershey every October until such time as either state legislation or military occupation changed that trend; township government was limited to elections held on April 6th for members chosen by majority vote instead of apportionment based on population; residents were allowed to hold one job per week during summer months when there were no jobs available outside the township limits In 1861 Washington Township was dissolved into separate townships including Beaverdam Creek while still remaining withinReading Borough; this action represented another step towards giving greater autonomy to individual townships whilestill remainingwithinthe larger municipality As early as 1870s there were plans for a railroad between Harrisburg and Philadelphia viaWashington Township providing economic opportunities for farmers along its route The PA Railroad Company laid track through Washington Township from Indiana Junction near Hazleton northward on July 2nd 1870 completion bringing about increased traffic throughout muchofcentralPAandintoPhiladelphiain 1886 but not until after Congress passed enabling railway construction without state approval !
