Uniontown, Pennsylvania is a town in Pike County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first effective lighted weapon in Uniontown was a hand-held musket that was used by frontier men in 1777 during the American Revolution. A rifle squad from Fort Pitt founded the first volunteer Militia Unit in 1802 and used their rifles to light up Uniontown for military purposes. In 1814, George Armstrong Custer went into battle against Native Americans at Little Bighorn and his horse was killed under him; this event is often cited as the start of modern warfare. After Custer's death, Uniontown became known as "the battlefield of the west." The US Signal Corps established its headquarters here in 1868 and began using electric lights for night operations soon after. The town saw more industrial growth during World War I than any other location in western Pennsylvania, with an increase in munitions production due to enemy incendiary bombing raids on Pittsburghduring World War I which destroyed many businesses and homes nearby. During World War II, Munitions production increased again due to Allied demand for German weapons manufacturing plants; however, much of this activity took place outside of Uniontown because of wartime rationing regulations. The community was founded by Swedish settlers in 1768 and named for George Washington, who had been an general during the American Revolution. In 1824, Uniontown became a borough, and then a city in 1867. On December 14, 1920, it merged with the nearby town of Monroeville to form the new city of Uniontown-Monroeville. The merger was approved by a vote of its residents and was announced by Mayor John Prentice on January 12, 1921. Uniontown has experienced several economic setbacks over the years; its most recent recession began in 2006 and lasted until 2009. However, there have been some recent successes as well: In 2008 Uniontown became one of only two cities in Pennsylvania to be awarded money from the stimulus package offered by President Barack Obama; that same year it also received financial support from entrepreneur Bill Gates through his foundation. Today Uniontown is known for its wide variety of businesses including various health care providers as well as local manufacturing companies such as those producing pork products and textiles. One notable business established within the past few decades is Wexford Glass Works which produces high-quality window glass products locally while also selling services such as installation and repair assistance to other businesses in town

Uniontown was a small town in Pennsylvania that wasuhung by the United States of America during the 19th century. Uniontown had a population of around 1,200 people at its peak in 1848. The town developed around a canal that connected the Susquehanna River to the Ohio River. The town grew rapidly due to its location and the access to natural resources that it enjoyed. In 1853, Uniontown became an incorporated village and continued to grow until it had a population of over 10,000 people by 1860. The town was renamed Pittsburgh in 1881 after General George Washington Pitt (1784-1865). The growth of Steel City and other industrial centers in the area led to rapid economic development in Uniontown. By 1912, Uniontown had shrunk to just 90 residents and did not exist as an official municipality again until 1954 when it reemerged as part of the newly formed Allegheny County government.
Uniontown was founded in 1792 by the merger of two small villages, Union and Newtown. It became a town in 1812. The first courthouse was built in 1815. In 1845, it became the seat of government for Allentown County. In 1912, Uniontown became part of the new City of Bethlehem.
