Uniontown is a borough in Carbon County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,565 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Uniontown is home to the Allegheny Valley Railroad and was seat of government for Carbon County until 1881. The town was founded by German immigrants in 1795 as "Unterstadt", which translated to "base camp." They named their new settlement after General Washington's Victory Column, which crosses the river near present-day Uniontown. The first post office was established in 1796 and the first store opened in 1800. In 1814, Andrew Mellon donated land to form what would become Uniontown Borough; it became a part of Carbon County on March 1, 1821. In 1881, when Carbon County merged with Monmouth County, Uniontown remained an independent borough. On November 3 that year, however, a referendum passed by 7-2 vote to merge with both Monmouth and Westmoreland Counties; this merger took effect on November 5th. Uniontown has experienced significant growth over the years – its population increased from 2,564 in 1990 to 4,836 as of 2010 – due primarily to its status as a bedroom community for Pittsburgh’s steel industry and its location within close proximity of many major employers such as Carnegie Steel Company and UPMC/PPG Industries Incorporated (formerly known as Wernher Electric Corporation). On the morning of September 25, 1775, a group of men and boys under the leadership of Captain George Washington Arbuckle marched from Uniontown to Harrisburg in order to demand that the Continental Congress recognize their independence. The march was called "The Declaration of Independence." After reaching Harrisburg, they made their way to Philadelphia where they delivered their declaration to Representative Robert H. Morris. The following day, they traveled back home and deposited their document at Uniontown's meetinghouse. Since its founding in 1775, Uniontown has been an active community that has commemorated various events related to its history. In 1928, Uniontown erected a memorial to those who died during theRevolutionary War in nearby West Point Cemetery. In 1985, Uniontown officially became a city when it merged with neighboring West Point Township. Today, UnionTown continues to celebrate its independence through various events such as its annual Fourth of July parade and summertime fireworks display.
